Are Calories Really That Necessary? – Go And Get Fit

No matter where you are –  Birthday parties, dinner parties, weddings, funerals, bar mitzvahs one topic of discussion always comes up. Calories. Yes, the dreaded calories. They are numbers we look at and obsess more about than the figures on our pay packet.
(assuming it’s still the 1980’s and you get paid with an actual pay package).
The truth is that calories are just a small part of the story. They are like an extra in a small budget movie. A calorie is not just a calorie. It’s what the body does with that calorie that counts. Take for example a person who eats 2000 calories of food for the day. If she/he eats 2000 calories of proper carbohydrates, fruit, grains and good clean protein then the chances of she or he, putting on weight are quite slim. Excuse the pun.
All of this person’s calories deliver great fiber for digestion, good protein for muscle building and healthy carbohydrates for energy.
Compare that to an individual who eats 2000 calories for the day of processed foods such as Ski yogurt 99% FAT-FREE – (yeah like that was an issue, not the ten tablespoon of sugar).
Microwavable burgers for lunch (Ah yes nothing sounds more divine than meat layered with processed cheese then radiated in the microwave between two floppy pieces of steamy bread).
Then finally a Hawaiian pizza for dinner ( mmm nothing says traditional Italian Pizza like pineapple and ham).
All of that delivered hardly any fiber; there is a lot of sugar which raises insulin levels which stores fat and the protein isn’t good quality protein yet both have 2000 calories.
Always remember that food is about more than just calories. It’s also about nourishment, building and healing the body, and providing nutrients for all the vital functions that keep us alive and thriving. When we reduce our food to calories, we are discrediting all of its other crucial roles.
